Pensacola is a city located in Escambia County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 85,492. Pensacola is the county seat of Escambia County. The city is on the west coast of Florida and is home to Naval Air Station Pensacola and the University of West Alabama. The city's name derives from the Spanish word "pensamiento", meaning "thought." Pensacola was originally occupied by Muskogean-speaking peoples. The Pensacola people were a powerful tribe who dominated much of west Florida during the late 16th century. By the 18th century, they had been reduced to a small minority in their original territory. They migrated eastward in the early 19th century in response to pressure from European-American settlers. The United Kingdom acquired Florida from Spain in 1821 and administered it as part of the West Indies Province. In 1830, Andrew Jackson moved the U.S. federal government from Washington, D.C., to what would become Pensacola as part of his effort to strengthen American nationalism and improve relations with Spain. He named the new capital for General Manuel de Montiano y del Castillo, an officer he admired who had fought against Napoleon during the Peninsular War (1808-1814). In 1838, Escambia County was formed from parts of Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties. In 1845, Pensacola became the county
The Twin Bluffs Pensacola are two historic landmarks in Pensacola, Florida, United States. The twin bluffs are a sandbar that extends into the Gulf of Mexico, just offshore from the city center. The bluffs are part of a larger system of sandbars and islands known as the Escambia Bay Islands National Wildlife Refuge.
Brothers Roy and Harry Briggs purchased 640 acres (2.6 km2) of property on the Twin Bluffs and began dredging sand from the bay to build a resort called Twin Bluff Point. The resort opened in 1935 and featured a dance pavilion, beachfront cabins, and a fishing pier. The Briggs brothers sold Twin Bluff Point to the City of Pensacola in 1966, and it became part of Escambia Bay Islands National Wildlife Refuge.
