The city is on the west coast of Florida and is home to Naval Air Station Pensacola and the University of West Alabama. The city's name derives from the Spanish word "pensamiento", meaning "thought." By the 18th century, they had been reduced to a small minority in their original territory. They migrated eastward in the early 19th century in response to pressure from European-American settlers. The United Kingdom acquired Florida from Spain in 1821 and administered it as part of the West Indies Province. In 1830, Andrew Jackson moved the U.S. federal government from Washington, D.C., to what would become Pensacola as part of his effort to strengthen American nationalism and improve relations with Spain. He named the new capital for General Manuel de Montiano y del Castillo, an officer he admired who had fought against Napoleon during the Peninsular War (1808-1814). In 1838, Escambia County was formed from parts of Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties. In 1845, Pensacola became the county
